In Memory of Talei Jones- by Hilary Billings
I met Talei while I was in Nicaragua on a surf and yoga retreat with Holly Beck and six other adventurous women. Talei and I shared a cabana, as well as many moments of laughter and joy. She was the closest woman to me in age and made me feel welcomed, loved, and supported everyday. We rode horses together down the beach, boarded down the world's most active cinder-cone volcano during a lightning storm, and spent every morning out in the waves trying our best to surf.
Everyday was an adventure and every night we fell asleep to the sounds of geckos chirping. It was pure magic.
It was hard to believe that only two weeks after saying goodbye such a tragedy would strike.
We were all stunned by the abrupt end to her beautiful, compassionate, and young life. I think it impacted each of us deeply. When you spend that much time with such a small group of women, you can't help but leave tightly bonded to each other. Having her taken from this world was like fraying the ends of our collective fabric. We would never be complete without her, though we would always carry her memory in our spirits. She was a part of us.
Throughout our communications and e-mails back and forth, the group shared some wonderful words about our departed friend. It was unanimous that we all felt blessed to have gotten to know such a special person. Even though our time was brief, we loved this woman. Below are some of the thoughts from her fellow travelers in her memory.
"Talei Jones was a symbol of the vivacity of life, such a colorful person, and funny as all hell. I feel fortunate and am grateful to have spent time with her at El Coco Loco this July." -Andrea P.
"All I can think about is how lucky I am to have met her, even for just a week. Talei was the smoothest, the coolest, the gnarliest, the sweetest, the funniest (and the most FUN) Chica...and she had such a strong POSITIVE presence and an amazing hunger for life...she will be sorely missed." -Jennifer R.
"Talei was such a beautiful human being and I don't understand why she died in such an accident. I didn't know her well but in the time we all shared together I felt bonded to her." -Suzanne S.
"Talei embodied 'life' more than most people ever would." -Kristi S.
"The world is truly at a loss without Talei in it. It's a loss to those who never even met her." -Emily R.
"Talei really embodied that mentality (of living everyday like your last)... She embraced life and lived it with a smile and a laugh. We can all be inspired by her example." -Holly Beck
"Talei was one of the most interesting people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. She was touched with a hint of uncommon maturity, interspersed with sprinkles of ageless humor, and utterly ensconced in noble grace. All of us at Suave Dulce shared a charmed bond, forged with our mutual allegiance to loving life. And now, it will remain unbroken, in perpetuum, with our collective memories of Talei (and of one another), in death and transfiguration." -Joice C.
Talei, I wish you great happiness, peace, and an endless summer. You have bestowed upon your seven fellow travelers some of the brightest blessings one could ask for: inspiration, spirit for adventure, friendship, and love.
I now live my life by the example you set for me, striving each day for adventure and an experience worth having. You have touched my heart. I feel you around me and am choosing to live each day not only for myself, but also for your memory. I want to make you proud. I want to see and do what you didn't get the chance to. I strive not only to become as smart as worldly as you were at such a young age, but to embrace the wisdom and old soul mentality that you possessed.
I think I speak for all of the women on our retreat when I say we miss you dearly. I know we will catch waves again together someday. And until then, I will think of you every time I step into the ocean.
May you rest in peace, my precious friend.

Memories from Jason Raj
I met Talei in 2008, when she started an internship in the same company as me in London. It was only a three-month placement but I had fallen hopelessly in love with her by the end of the first week, if not earlier. Apart from being ridiculously beautiful, she always seemed so happy and infected everyone around her with her energy, positivity and upbeat attitude. The more I got to know her, the more impressed and in awe I was. She was intelligent, caring, always willing to help, and a great girl to hang out with. Some of the best nights out I've had were with Talei Jones, including one outrageous night of cocktails, comedy show, too much wine, a hotel bar in Paddington and not getting in until 4am. Shame about work the next day!
We saw each other a few times while she was still in the UK, and stayed in touch when she moved to China, Australia and lastly Central America. Even though she had loads of things to do and all sorts of exciting things to be doing, she still found time to reply to emails and spend time chatting on Facebook.
I'm so sad she's gone. My head can barely believe it and my heart refuses to accept it. I always thought I would see her again and the thought that I won't is too painful to contemplate.
I can't pick out other specific occasions from all the fun times we had, but my overriding feeling when I think of her is inspiration. She was always seeking out adventure, seeing new places, experiencing new things. But she remained wonderfully down-to-earth the whole time, taking everything in on her own terms. That's what I loved most of all about her I think. She was so strong, nothing could faze her.
No-one should have been taken so young less than Talei, but everyone she ever met will remember her with fondness and love. That is the mark of a truly special person, and I feel so proud to call you my friend, Talei.
The world is a poorer place without you, baby. Love you forever xxxxxx

Adventures of Talei shared at Fiji memorial - Michelle Lam
Talei's memorial service speech - Michelle LamSaturday 20th August 2011 - Dakuibeqa village, Beqa Island, Fiji
I first met Talei in October 2004 at the High Holborn halls of residence in London. We had a great group of friends at the London School of Economics - Swarna, Nisha, Josie, Mikko, Monique, Shailey, Kwame, Amna, Rahul, Seb, just to name a few. Talei was a natural leader amongst us organizing nights out, hosting drinks and dinners. We went to music festivals at the Isle of Wight and Barcelona, attended exhibitions in London, had many fun nights out and of course many times we just sat, hung out and chatted about everything - music, funny stories, gossip, politics, boys … Talei was such easy company she made friends wherever she went and it was a natural gift of hers to bring people together.
In our third year at university, Talei came to visit in Hong Kong and we went to watch the Rugby Sevens together. We got up early to secure good seats in the south stands. She taught me to greet the Fijian team with 'Bula!' as they marched around the pitch, and she even pointed out the different rugby tactics the Fijians liked to use. I have to say I have been a keen supporter of the Fijian rugby team ever since.
The summer of 2007, after we graduated from LSE, was the best. Amongst all the other post-graduation celebrations, the six-week road trip we had in the US was easily one of the most memorable trips I've ever had. We explored stunning landscapes like the Antelope canyon and Colorado River, camped in the bright white sand dunes in New Mexico and even visited Graceland with all our hair done up in Elvis quiffs. When planning where to go and what to do Talei's attitude was always 'why not?' She was always fond of exploration and trying new things.
Two years later, in late 2009, I was surprised and happy to hear that Talei was moving to Fuzhou in China. She came to visit in Hong Kong every few months to sort out visas and for weekend breaks with the other English teachers. I was always so impressed at how much Chinese she had picked up - an intelligent girl as always. When she told me her Chinese name was 打雷 (pronounced: da3 lei2) meaning Thunder we all had a right giggle. In the end, we decided that 愛莎 (pronounced: ai4 sha1) meaning lovely was much more fitting to her beautiful self.
There are still many more memories of Talei as she lived life to its fullest. She had gone far too soon but she lived a wonderful and colorful life. In these few weeks, I have realized that life is short and life is so fragile, so Talei, my dear friend, I will remember to live in every moment and enjoy this wonderful world just like you did.
To all of Talei's friends and family - "In love she will be remembered, in memory she lives"
